SUMMARY:Aida Edemariam | In Her Voice
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the store for a special In Her Voice event. \nBen McNally Books and Penguin Random House invite you to celebrate the launch of Aida Edemariam‘s new memoir The Wife’s Tale. \nAida will be joined by The Walrus’ executive editor\, Jessica Johnson\, for a discussion about The Wife’s Tale\, an intimate biography of her grandmother who witnessed almost a century of change in Ethiopia.. \nWhen: \nThursday\, March 1 @6:30pm \nWhere: \nBen McNally Books \n366 Bay St (South of Richmond) \nFree event! All are welcome! \nPlease confirm your attendance either online or by phone (416-361-0032) \n\n \nThe Wife’s Tale is an intimate memoir\, of both a life and a country. Aida Edemariam retells her grandmother\, Yetemegnu’s\, stories of a childhood surrounded by proud priests and soldiers\, of her husband’s imprisonment\, of her fight for justice–all of it played out against the rhythms of the natural world and an ancient cycle of religious festivals. She introduces us to a rich cast of characters–emperors and empresses\, scholars and nuns\, Marxist revolutionaries and wartime double agents–and through these encounters takes us deep into the landscape and culture of this many-layered\, often mischaracterized country. \n\n \nAIDA EDEMARIAM\, who is of dual Ethiopian and Canadian heritage\, grew up in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia. She studied English literature at Oxford University and the University of Toronto\, and has worked as a journalist in New York\, Toronto and London\, where she is a senior feature writer and editor for the Guardian. She is a recipient of a Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Award for a work of non-fiction in progress\, and lives in Oxford. \n\n \nJessica Johnson (@thegoodshopper) is executive editor and creative director of The Walrus. She is the former books editor at Saturday Night and the National Post. She is also a National Magazine Award-winning writer whose work has appeared in The New Republic. \n000000
